ZONING ORDINANCES

The City's zoning ordinances are on file in the Kirtland Public Library, or are available at $10.00 per copy from the City Clerk at the Kirtland Municipal Center. Following is a quick summary of some of the requirements covered in the ordinance chapter.

NEW STRUCTURES

Zoning permits are required for all new structures of any size, including sheds, room additions, etc. Permits are also required for any swimming pool (above ground or below ground) and any deck; also for any fence (living fences do not need permits, but have limits on their density). Some of these zoning permits will require additional building permits issued by Lake County Building Dept. Any accessory building over 1,000 square feet in total area must have the approval of the Planning and Zoning Commission.

REPAIRS: You do NOT need a permit for repairs to your home, like siding, painting, furnace repair, roof maintenance, etc. The City of Kirtland requires contractors to register, set bonds, and be licensed in the city.

The Lake County Building Dept. requires plumbers and electricians to be licensed in the county. Almost anything done to your property nowadays requires a permit; therefore, a call to city hall is your safest and surest start to each and every project a resident undertakes. If you have any question regarding any of the information given here please contact us at City Hall.

PERMITS, COSTS, FEES, & APPLICATIONS DITCH ENCLOSURES
A permit is required to fill in, cover, or install pipe in any ditches near the road. Contact the Service Department for applications and inspections at 256-1234.

PERMITS FOR FENCES, POOLS, SHEDS, BARNS, ADDITIONS TO DWELLINGS & CULVERTS
Any of the above require permits issued by the city. Contact the Zoning Inspector at 256-3332 for fees, applications, and permits.

GRADING AND FILLING PERMITS
Anyone making changes to land grades must obtain a permit to do so. Contact the City Engineer, Philip Kiefer, at 951-9000.

BUSINESS PERMIT
Any new business must register with the city and obtain a permit to operate a business.

LOGGING PERMITS
A nyone cutting timber from acreage in Kirtland must register with the Kirtland Police Department, so that a logging permit and bond to travel on the local roads is on file for damage purposes.

NEW HOUSE CONSTRUCTION PROCEDURE
A step-by-step- procedure packet is available in
the Zoning Office, open Monday -Friday from 8am to 4 pm.
