There is very little employment opportunity in Kirtland; therefore, most city residents work outside the City of Kirtland. Some of the larger places for employment are the Kirtland Board of Education, Holden Arboretum, LakeMetro Farm Park, as well as a few business like Endura Plastics, and Western Reserve Extended Care Facility. Several small businesses are located in Kirtland, mainly on the two main roads running through the city--State Rt. 306 or Chillicothe Rd. and US Rt.6, called either Chardon Rd or Euclid-Chardon Rd. There are over 350 of these very small specialized business or services in the Kirtland area, some "grand fathered" in residential areas. However, all require business permits to operate. This allows the city to keep track of its business operations for police and fire records as well as establishing the business with the city income tax collection agency, Regional Income Tax Agency, (RITA).
