POINTS of INTEREST KIRTLAND TEMPLE Original church built by the Mormons when they settled in this area in the 1830's. The temple was completed in 1836 with much of the sand and stone coming from the gravel pits off Hobart Road. In 1838, after the Mormons moved westward, the Temple was used by the Western Reserve Teacher's Seminary. In 1880, the Reorganized church of the Latter Day Saints reclaimed the temple as a place of worship. OLD SOUTH CHURCH Organized in 1819 as a typical Western Reserve pioneer church, Old South built its first building, a log cabin, on the site of the present edifice. A disastrous fire destroyed the first building, and a severe hurricane badly damage the second building. The present structure was erected in 1859, and the belfry was added two years later.
